Job Summary

The Team
Our Mackenzie Fire Zone Team & Fort Nelson Fire Zone Team within the Prince George Fire Centre are a cohesive and driven groups of highly skilled operations and technical specialists. The teams includes technicians, assistants, para attack members (Mackenzie Zone only), crew supervisors, crew leaders, and crew members. The Wildfire officer works closely with prevention staff, fire centre staff, asset management, finance, operations, and management teams. Guided by the pillars of emergency management-mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery-their impactful work in managing wildfires and other natural emergencies in British Columbia is both challenging and rewarding. The Role
This role is responsible for providing leadership and ensuring the implementation of the fire management program within the Mackenzie Fire Zone & Fort Nelson Fire Zone. By leading Zone's wildfire preparedness and response efforts the Wildfire Officer significantly impacts the surrounding communities by engaging with citizens, partners and stakeholders, particularly during high-pressure emergency events. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management, public administration, business administration or equivalent knowledge plus 2 years recent related experience*; OR
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management plus 4 years recent related experience*; OR
  • Grade 12 plus 6 years related experience*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and training may be considered; AND
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience; AND
  • Experience in program or project management; AND
  • Experience working on land and resource management issues; AND
  • Valid Class 5 driver licence

* Related experience is defined as operational emergency response experience in natural resources or a similar field.

Preference statements:
  • Incident Commander 3 certification within the Incident Command System
  • Senior Fireline Certification within the Incident Command System (ex. Type 2 or higher)
  • Experience in wildfire management

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in ICS positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for position to meet operational requirements.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
Mackenzie: Located within the Rocky Mountain Trench, Mackenzie provides a large selection of activities like snowmobiling, cross country and downhill skiing, hiking, mountain biking and camping in the summer. Fishing and boating can also be done at the nearby Morfee Lake.
Fort Nelson: Originally built around the bustling Alaska Highway, Fort Nelson has been awarded special designation as a wilderness management vicinity. Hiking, fishing, camping, wildlife viewing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are all popular. Visiting Liard River Hotsprings Provincial Park allows a unique experience for visitors and community members
